Holbox island is still a paradise worth while to be discovered. It is a very picturesque island with a typical fishing village of fishermen and miles of white sandy beaches that run into mangroves.

In Holbox the streets are out of sand, there are no cars, the most popular vehicles are golf cars and bicycles. Holbox is the last corner of the Peninsula of Yucatan, where you won’t find mass tourism, where the air is fresh and clear, where the sun more than warms your skin, and where you can walk around barefoot. Be amazed when you watch the dark night sky that is incredibly spotted with stars on one of your walks along the beach. Here, the nature is following its paste, without a hurry, far away from the hectic of the rest of the world.



How to arrive

In order to reach Holbox island by car one must first drive to Chiquilá where you will take a passenger boat to Holbox island. Chiquilá you find coming on the free highway Cancun-Merida and the crossing that indicates the deviation “Chiquilá und Holbox”. It is utmost important to take the “Libre” (tollfree highway), since the toll highway doesn’t have an exit to Chiquilá. You will pass the villages Kantunilkin, Solferino and finally Chiquilá.

The trip is about 2.5 hours long leaving from Cancun and 3.5 hours from Mérida. You should also know that mobile phones do not have a signal on this road.

The Climate

Like the rest of the Caribbean islands, the sun is almost always shining over Holbox. With an average temperature of 27ºC, the sea breeze makes the temperature comfortable, even in the hottest months of July and August.The rainy season is from September to November, and the windiest season from December to February. Information before you travel

Medical services.
Only basic medical services are provided on Holbox, because there is only a health center. Serious accidents or diseases are better treated in a hospital in Cancun. There is a small pharmacy where you can find basic drugs.

Telephone.
Public telephones are available in the village. Recently an internet café opened. Also, the hotel offers that service, there you can find all the necessary means of communications.

Banks.
There are no banks on Holbox and almost no shop accepts credit cards, but there is one ATM machine. However, in Xaloc traveler checks and credit cards are accepted.



Security.
Although security in other places in Mexico is an issue, the island is very secure and quiet. There are no crime reports about the island, in fact the police corps consists of only a few officers.

Binoculars.
They are a must in places such as Isla Pájaros (birds’ island) since it is not allowed to step foot on the island; so, in order to observe the species that live there, it is worth bringing binoculars.

Repellent.
In some months, especially when it rains occasionally, during dawn and dusk there are mosquitoes, so we recommend you to bring a repellent to avoid being disturbed. There are not many, they are not really a problem. Is's also possible to get repellent in the island.
