Holbox appears in the heart of Mayan culture, protecting its remains in the core of the island, pampering and converting them to one of the most impressive paradises in the Caribbean.

As a pirates´ refuge, shark-hunters’ island and nowadays a quiet, traditional fishermen´s village, Holbox island begins today to timidly face the tourism. Located in the Natural Protected Area of Yum-Balam, it becomes the perfect place to observe the nature living by its own rules, used to the human presence that doesn’t interfere with its processes.

    Landscape

xalochotelHolbox has to offer activities for everybody: Go snorkel, watch birds, relax and hang out with people who believe that there is more time than life. Here the mass tourism doesn’t exist, the jungle covers part of the 42 km long island; and looking along the coast you see endless white sandy virgin beaches.

The streets of the only village on the island are out of sand, the islanders walk around mostly barefoot, and many inhabitants are dedicated to make hammocks, in which most of them sleep heavenly.

The island is completely flat, without hills, and it is separated from the mainland through the Yalahau Lagoon. In the Mayan language: "Yal" means water and "Ahau" means king. At the end of the lagoon but on the continent you can find "el Ojo del agua", a small cenote or spring of fresh cristal clear sweet water. The local mythology states that this spring is a fountain of youth. The Yalahau lagoon embraces between others: Isla Morena or Isla Pájaros, where you can find the most important species of birds in the area.

    Birds

From April to October, about 40,000 flamingos visit this area to be able to eat the small organisms that produce their characteristic pink color. A lot of different birds live and nest here, increasing their number every year. The fregats, the white ibis, the white garceta, the cormoran, the red garceta, the spoonbill, white and grey pelicans, herons...

A lot of these birds breed in this area, but specially on Isla Pájaros you can commonly notice their nests on top of the trees. On this small island, where you can not step foot on, one can observe 150 species, depending on the season. Without any doubt, it is a bird sanctuary and if you are a bird-lover, don’t miss it!

    Other animals

The island is also home for lizards, boas and other snakes, a wide variety of insects, marine cockroaches and others. From May until September the marine turtles are landing on the Holbox beaches to lay their eggs.

The life on Holbox follows the tides of the sea around the Island. Fishing being the main income source, the fishermen leave the island every morning and return in the late morning. They return to their homes, loaded with incredibly good fish to have lunch.

The dolphins swim in the waters around the island, accompanying the boats, sharks, whale sharks… A wonderful and fascinating underwater world.
